Why Is a Colonoscopy Important

What Is a Colonoscopy?

A colonoscopy is a procedure that allows your doctor to examine the inside of the large intestine (colon) using a thin, flexible tube equipped with a small camera. It is commonly used to screen for colon cancer, detect colon polyps, and evaluate digestive symptoms.

The procedure is performed in an outpatient setting, allowing most patients to return home the same day.

Why Is a Colonoscopy Important?

Colonoscopy plays an important role in preventive healthcare by helping identify abnormalities before they become more serious. It may be recommended to:

  • Screen for colon cancer
  • Detect and remove colon polyps
  • Evaluate rectal bleeding
  • Investigate changes in bowel habits
  • Assess ongoing abdominal discomfort
  • Examine unexplained digestive symptoms

Colon Cancer Screening Saves Lives

Routine colon cancer screening is one of the most effective ways to detect changes in the colon early, often before symptoms develop.

If you are due for a screening or have concerns about your digestive health, speaking with a gastroenterologist can help you determine the right next steps.

What to Expect During Your Colonoscopy

Our team is committed to making your experience as smooth and comfortable as possible.

01

Before the Procedure

Colonoscopy requires bowel preparation to clear the colon for a complete view. This involves following a clear-liquid diet for one to two days before the procedure and drinking a prescribed bowel-cleansing solution as directed. CEC provides detailed prep instructions at the time of scheduling.

02

During the Procedure

You will receive intravenous sedation to keep you comfortable throughout the procedure. The colonoscopy itself typically takes 20 to 45 minutes, depending on findings. You will not be aware of the procedure while sedated.

03

After the Procedure

Most patients recover within 30 to 60 minutes in the recovery area at CEC. Mild bloating or gas is common and typically passes quickly. Because sedation is used, a responsible adult must be available to drive you home. Most patients return to normal activities the following day.
