Understanding Upper GI Endoscopy (EGD)
Upper GI Endoscopy, also known as Esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD), is a procedure used to examine the upper digestive tract, including the esophagus, stomach, and the first part of the small intestine (duodenum).
Using a thin, flexible tube with a small camera, Dr. Jaesoo Pak can directly examine these areas to identify abnormalities that may be contributing to digestive symptoms. The procedure provides valuable information that helps guide diagnosis and treatment decisions.

When Is an Upper GI Endoscopy Recommended?
An EGD may be recommended to evaluate:
- Persistent heartburn or acid reflux (GERD)
- Difficulty swallowing
- Upper abdominal pain or discomfort
- Ongoing nausea or vomiting
- Suspected stomach ulcers or inflammation
- Unexplained digestive symptoms
- Abnormal findings from imaging studies
In some cases, tissue samples (biopsies) may also be obtained during the procedure for further evaluation.
What to Expect During an EGD
Before the Procedure
You will receive preparation instructions before your appointment, including guidance regarding eating, drinking, and medications.
During the Procedure
The procedure is performed under sedation to help you remain comfortable and relaxed. An endoscope is gently passed through the mouth to examine the upper digestive tract.
After the Procedure
Most patients recover quickly and return home the same day. Mild throat discomfort or bloating may occur temporarily and usually resolves within a short period.

An upper GI endoscopy typically takes 10 to 30 minutes. Most patients spend about one to two hours at the facility overall, including preparation, the procedure itself, and recovery from sedation.
You will need to fast for at least eight hours before the procedure. Dr. Pak's office will provide complete pre-procedure instructions, including guidance on your regular medications, at the time of scheduling.
Upper GI endoscopy evaluates the esophagus, stomach, and first section of the small intestine. A colonoscopy evaluates the large intestine. Different symptoms and conditions determine which procedure is appropriate for each patient.
Most patients tolerate upper GI endoscopy well due to sedation. Mild throat discomfort or bloating may occur afterward and typically resolves within a few hours. Most patients resume normal activities the next day.
